Our History

In the early summer of 1985, several families had begun to come together for Bible Study and prayer. As they met, they all talked about a shared desire to experience a deeper worship together and prayed for God’s guidance for them as a group.  The men of the group soon met together.  They prayed together and continued to pray individually until they came back together a few days later.
At that time, they were in agreement…God was leading them to consider the organizing of a new church in our community. Thus, those eleven families and several others worked together to form a body of believers called “Rocky Mount Baptist Church.”
The church met together for the first time on Sunday, September 15th, 1985 at Emmaeus Primitive Baptist Church on Oak Grove Church Road in Carrollton, Ga.  Members of that congregation had given permission to the Felton Denney family to invite the group to meet there until another location could be arranged.  Shortly after the first meeting, the Carrollton Baptist Association building on Stewart Street became the location for all scheduled services of Rocky Mount Baptist Church.  This, however, was temporary, as the group continued to strive toward the construction of a new church building. Prior to any construction, the establishment of a southern Baptist church in our community had to be approved and chartered by the Georgia Baptist Convention.  Thus, we made application, and on Sunday, October 27, 1985, a representative from the Georgia Baptist Convention came to Carrollton, and on that afternoon, sixty-six charter members signed the proclamation to establish a Baptist church in our community.  The newly formed church would adopt the “Baptist Faith and Message” as its article of faith, and further resolve to cooperate with the Carrollton Baptist Association, the State Convention, and the Southern Baptist Convention.
Afterwards, Felton and Josephine Denney, donated 13 acres of land (including an adjoining lake) on which to build our church.  Then, money was needed to pay for the construction of our church building.  After talking with some of the administrators at the Georgia Baptist office in Atlanta, we learned that the Convention would grant “interest free” loans to church congregations for the construction of a newly planted church.  Thus, after figuring exactly what we would need, we did just that.  We borrowed the money and began to plan for the construction of our church.  All but very specialized construction needs were provided by the men and boys of our congregation, and the loan was easily paid back to the convention. Our building still remains “debt free” to this day to, and, in 1994 we completed the second phase which added a fellowship hall and more office and Sunday School space.
